Recently, SFF author Tansy Rayner Roberts wrote an excellent post debunking the idea that women did nothing interesting or useful throughout history, and that trying to write fictional stories based on this premise of feminine insignificance is therefore both inaccurate and offensive. To quote:

“History is not a long series of centuries in which men did all the interesting/important things and women stayed home and twiddled their thumbs in between pushing out babies, making soup and dying in childbirth.

History is actually a long series of centuries of men writing down what they thought was important and interesting, and FORGETTING TO WRITE ABOUT WOMEN. It’s also a long series of centuries of women’s work and women’s writing being actively denigrated by men. Writings were destroyed, contributions were downplayed, and women were actively oppressed against, absolutely.

But the forgetting part is vitally important. Most historians and other writers of what we now consider “primary sources” simply didn’t think about women and their contribution to society. They took it for granted, except when that contribution or its lack directly affected men.

This does not in any way mean that the female contribution to society was in fact less interesting or important, or complicated, simply that history—the process of writing down and preserving of the facts, not the facts/events themselves—was looking the other way.”

The relevance of this statement to the creation of SFF stories cannot be understated. Time and again, we see fans and creators alike defending the primacy of homogeneous – which is to say, overwhelmingly white, straight and male – stories on the grounds that anything else would be intrinsically unrealistic.

Talking about domestic fic earlier made me want a road trip story that’s basically the opposite of my usual favorite road trip stories, much as I love them (the ones where Charles stays out of Erik’s head and the guys mutually pine for each other.)

I want the one where Erik says, okay, I said you should know to stay out of my head, but that was a strained moment. Now that we’re going to work together… go ahead, use your telepathy, let’s see how this goes.

And since Charles is always sensing him and occasionally reading his mind, Erik wakes up and the coffee’s already made, the bathroom’s always free when he wants a shower, and whenever they take a new hotel room, he doesn’t have to explain which bed he’d rather have or why, Charles just takes the other one every time.

When Charles is on a long phone call with Raven, Erik goes to an archive to track down more former Nazis, and it’s raining heavily when he gets out. He arrives back at the hotel to find Charles waiting for him in the parking lot with an umbrella over his head and another one in his hand and a towel slung over his shoulder, because Charles sensed Erik coming.

And at night when Erik’s nightmares start, Charles wakes him up and holds him, and knows not to say anything else about it.

Despite the attraction between them, Erik isn’t ready for more, and Charles senses that too and holds off on making a move, just offering his friendship and trying to be there for Erik and playing chess with him and trying to get him to like tea, because it’s gentler on the stomach than coffee.

And of course, ultimately this all means that on the beach, Erik never puts the helmet on, because by now he’s so used to Charles’s telepathy that he would never think to shut it out. And they live happily ever after, running the school together for decades to come.

BUT NO WRITING ANYTHING ELSE TIL REMIX IS DONE.

Raziyya al-Din (1205 – October 13, 1240) usually referred to in history as Razia Sultan, was the Queen of Delhi in India from 1236 to May 1240. Like some other Muslim princesses of the time, she was trained to lead armies and administer kingdoms if necessary. Razia Sultana was the only woman ruler of both the Sultanate and the Mughal period. She succeeded her father Shams-ud-din Iltutmish to the Sultanate of Delhi in 1236. Iltutmish became the first sultan to appoint a woman as his successor when he designated his daughter Razia as his heir apparent. She dressed like a man and sat in open durbar. She was an efficient ruler and possessed all the qualities of a Monarch. As a child and adolescent, Razia had little contact with the women of the harem, so she had not learnt the customary behavior of women in the Muslim society that she was born into. As Sultan, Razia preferred a man’s tunic and headdress; and contrary to custom, she would later show her face when she rode an elephant into battle at the head of her army. (+)
